Abstract

This study conducts a bibliometric analysis to explore the development and trends of research on leadership in family businesses using data from the Scopus database. A total of 580 English-language documents, including articles and conference proceedings, were analyzed with VOSviewer to identify publication trends, key authors, institutions, and thematic clusters. The findings show a significant increase in research interest since 2008, peaking in 2024. Notable contributors include authors such as Calabrò and Cater, and institutions like Università Bocconi and WHU. The United States, Italy, and the United Kingdom are the most productive countries in this field. Network visualization reveals eight major keyword clusters, covering areas such as governance, succession, gender diversity, transformational leadership, and sustainability. Overlay and density visualizations show a shift from traditional leadership themes to emerging topics like CSR, female leadership, and post-pandemic adaptability. Despite growing attention, literature review studies on this topic remain limited, emphasizing the novelty of this bibliometric approach. The study identifies several underexplored areas, including gender identity, social capital, and transgenerational entrepreneurship, suggesting future research directions. By mapping existing knowledge, this study provides a foundation for scholars seeking to further explore leadership in the context of family businesses in the digital environment.
